During our last Disney vacation I decided that I wanted to take advantage of some of the awesome activities that our resort had to offer. One of the activities that we were able to squeeze into our magical schedule was a surrey bike ride. What the heck is a surrey bike you say? Well a surrey bike or quadracycle is a four wheeled bike that can be pedaled by 2 or 4 people. They are commonly referred to as “surreys,” due to their resemblance to horse-drawn wagons of similar appearance and the same name.
You can find these awesome human powered vehicles at the Boardwalk, Wilderness Lodge, Saratoga Springs, Old Key West, Port Orleans Riverside, and Caribbean Beach resorts at Walt Disney World. We were lucky we didn’t have to travel far in search of a rental location since we were staying at the Port Orleans Riverside! Guests must be 18 years old to rent a surrey bike and will be required to show ID.
The rental process was a breeze! We walked right up and my two year old picked the bike he wanted us to ride. It was double bench surrey and green, his favorite color! The kids were buckled into the front basket and my one year old was outfitted with a helmet.
Overall both kids loved the ride. Kellen’s favorite part of the ride was definitely ringing the bell. Next time we ride, I will make sure to remember these two tips.
1. Do not rent a double bench surrey if only two people are going to be peddling. Grandma was in the back seat, BUT had a hard time reaching the bike’s peddles. This might also be the case for shorter children. One of the small hills we peddled up felt like Everest for this reason! Wimps!
2. The surrey was not hard to control but was definitely different from a regular bike. The added weight of the surrey means you will need a longer brake time than with a standard bike. So plan ahead! Caveat! Don’t let your husband make you believe that both “steering” wheels control the bike. (Bless my heart…)
The grounds at Port Orleans are so beautiful. What a great and affordable way to tour the resort! The single bench surreys are only $20.00 per half hour while the double bench surreys are $22.00 per half hour.
