Add a visit to the world famous San Diego Zoo

I love zoos. They amaze me, intrigue me, and no two visits are ever the same. I could spend an afternoon at the zoo just about day and be happy. I even worked at a zoo in Alaska one summer. I just love the atmosphere. The San Diego zoo is one of the biggest and most famous zoos in the world and you can add a visit to your Disneyland package!

How far is it from Disneyland?
Anaheim to San Diego is about an hour and a half to two hours by car/bus depending on time of day and traffic. It is a beautiful drive! So it makes an easy day trip or an overnight (or 2).

Half day or whole day?
I have done both but a whole day is at least 500% better (in my opinion). A half day is just scratching the surface, just leaves you wanting more…you would have to rush just to walk around it all. Any zoo is fun to relaxingly explore but the San Diego Zoo is designed to explore. If you find yourself with only half a day and you really love zoos and animals; go for it. Otherwise, take a whole day to explore, relax, and see all the amazing habitats and animals. There is a bus ride around the zoo which is great but should not be the only way to see it. I recommend riding the bus when you first arrive to get your bearings, or toward the end of the day when you are tired but not yet ready to leave.

Day trip or overnight?
It depends on your schedule. You can add on a day at the Sand Diego zoo and transportation to/from your Disneyland Resort Hotel. So a day trip is possible. If you want more time in San Diego (one of the best cities in America if you ask me) then overnight could be a good option. Honestly, San Diego is a destination in and of itself. The zoo is situated in Balboa Park which is home to 17 museums, 19 gardens, 9 attractions (including the zoo), multiple performing arts groups, and countless recreational activities. So, a visit outside the zoo has a lot to take in as well. Basically, if you only have a day-make it a day trip and you will love it. If you have more time, it is worth staying a night or two. You can even visit LEGOLAND and/or Sea World!
