Over the summer, I got to experience Disneyland for the first time ever. As soon as I got there, I instantly knew that I wanted to spend a good amount of time in Mickey’s ToonTown. Why? Because of the nostalgia! It always makes me super sad that ToonTown was taken out of Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, but I was extremely happy to be able to experience the OG ToonTown in Disneyland!
First off, ToonTown is not exclusively for kids! If you love bright colors, a toon-y atmosphere or even just looking for a cute place to take some photos, then Mickey’s ToonTown is the place for you! Mickey’s ToonTown is a cute, interactive town that is full of crazy buildings and sculptures! Interactive you say? Yes! There is so much for your kids (or you) to climb on, run around in, and even ride! ToonTown cars, that don’t move, make for cute photo ops. They’re usually found parked outside of each Disney character’s home. We will touch more on that in a minute.
ToonTown is home to even a few rides! My all-time favorite ride in ToonTown is Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin. Roger Rabbit is usually forgotten when you bring up Disney characters, and I love that Disneyland still pays homage to him! This ride is categorized as a dark ride, and spins you through the story (or movie) of Roger Rabbit. On this ride, you’ll be able to find Roger, the weasels and even DIP!
Besides attractions, Mickey’s ToonTown also has shopping, dining and play areas for kids. The quick services in ToonTown are amazing. Pluto’s Dog House has some yummy and quick hot dogs, and Clarabella’s has some chilling ice cream. The two stores I liked to look around in was the Gag Factory that featured a lot of goodies featuring Mickey and friends and also the ToonTown Five & Dime.
My favorite part of ToonTown is the houses. I have photos of my four year old self, perched outside of Minnie’s and Mickey’s doors in Walt Disney World’s ToonTown. So seeing these cute, aesthetically pleasing cartoon homes in person again made my heart swoon. The coolest part of these homes is that they also double as Character Spots! After a walk through tour of the character’s home, you get to decide if you want to walk into the line to see the character or you can simply walk out.
We decided to not wait in line to go see characters, mainly because we wanted to make sure we had time to see everything else Disneyland had to offer since it was our first time there. As we walked out of Minnie’s home, we came upon another cute little photo spot in Minnie’s Garden! Minnie had a cute little “tea garden” sculpture where you could sit down at her bistro table and pretend to sip on big cups of tea! It’s the little details like this that make ToonTown so much fun!
A lot of Disneyland locals, who are friends, told me that Mickey’s ToonTown is a “pass” on a normal park day. But I’m here to tell you, if you’re a first time, and if you miss the nostalgia from Walt Disney World, then you definitely want to spend at least an hour in Mickey’s ToonTown! Soak in the wonky buildings, weird architecture, and even swing buy Daisy’s Diner for a quick bite to eat! Oh, and don’t forget to talk to the mailboxes! Just try it, and it might talk back.
